Adventures in Camp Prep!
Episode 1: Riding the Bus

Welcome to ‘Adventures in Camp Prep!’, CYJ’s ever-thrilling weekly periodical, designed to get YOU (and your campers) ready for an amazing summer!

These should be even MORE exhilarating than normal policy emails, if you can imagine that! That’s because, in the name of adding Camp Fun™ to everything we do, we’ve hired master comedy writers to head this series!*

So stay tuned, don’t touch that dial, and get informed in the funniest newsletter out there (according to our moms)! You won’t want to miss a single exciting installment of. . . Adventures in Camp Prep!

Getting to Camp
“The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round…until we hit a nail and we’re stuck stuck stuck, stuck stuck stuck, stuck stuck stuck. Hitchin’ rides to camp on a garbage truck, all through the town…”

It’s become quite the fad in some camps to arrive without warning in a hot air balloon and to parachute into an open Dining Hall window. Call us old-fashioned, but at CYJ, we still recommend the good old camp bus!

The summer experience really begins on those four wheels. Our counselors run the season’s first activities, lead icebreakers, and teach some CYJ cheers. It’s a great way for new campers to plunge into camp life and to help them connect with new friends and staff. We also find that saying “goodbyes” at the bus stop tends to be easier and less emotional than doing it at camp. (For the campers, at least… emotional parents, we wish you good luck!)

CYJ offers bus transportation to camp (at no additional charge) from the Jewish Community Centers in Austin, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio.

Returning Home

The legendary Rabbi Maimonides said that a righteous person should always take the opportunity to check out his kid’s campgrounds.

Okay, we don’t know if he actually said that, but it’s still pretty wise, right? That’s why we usually don’t have returning buses from camp; instead, parents drive in and pick up their campers from our world-famous Family Day!

Family Day is a chance for families to see the grounds and meet the people that their children spent so much time with. Fun, family-friendly activities are set up throughout the camp, giving our visitors a taste of the CYJ life, (not to mention some amazing kosher BBQ!). Family Day programs—along with open registration for the following summer—will run 10:30 AM-1:00 PM.

Alternative Arrangements

Transportation to the airport in Austin will be provided for any camper flying home at the end of the session. Departing flights must be scheduled between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM on your session’s Family Day.

Special this year: Since camp sessions in the 2016 season are ending on a Monday, we understand that some people won’t be able to join us for our Family Day festivities. (Apparently some people work…indoors? We heard that on the internet.)

With that in mind, we’ll be providing limited return-bus options. Campers from both Dallas and Houston can sign up for returning buses for a $40 fee.

Note: At CYJ, we consider it in good taste to return all children to the homes they came from. Therefore, we have a policy not to release campers to anyone other than their parents or guardians. If someone other than the parent or legal guardian will be picking up your child or children, you must either let us know on your transportation forms or call the office before closing day.

P.S. None of this bus stuff matters if we don’t all have our forms in! We can’t take any camper for the summer without ALL of their forms, and the due date is right around the corner!  So don’t delay—They are Due TODAY! Check your CYJ account if you’re not sure what you have left to do!
