Recruiting new campers is something that we do every year, all year round. This year we are lucky enough to have made some special connections with families in one of the smaller Jewish communities in Texas – El Paso! We had just one camper from El Paso last summer and we are now up to 13 campers for 2017!
Through a special grant that we received last year, we have been able to direct some specific marketing and incentives to the El Paso community. This week, Yael and Michael traveled to El Paso to meet with Rabbi Royi Shaffin of Congregation B’nai Zion and introduce themselves to our new CYJ families. Rabbi Shaffin and his community have worked tirelessly to recruit kids from his synagogue, including his 3 daughters, who will join us this summer. In addition to having Rabbi Shaffin’s help, we also have an ally in Lisa Hartman, a CYJ Board Member who is lives in and is from El Paso. She has been extremely helpful to us in providing contacts and finding additional resources to help in our recruiting efforts.
We say in all of our marketing and fundraising materials that we hope every Jewish child has the opportunity to have a Jewish summer camp experience, and we don’t mean just Texas and its 4 big cities. We are very excited to be making connections in El Paso and look forward to expanding into more small communities in coming years.
